Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of hunger.

"It was like something flipping and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
