Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that exceeded the edge of outer space.

The team of pioneers also comprised leaders in different industries.
