Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Pollution After Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "critical" range.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Multiple areas of the city recorded an air quality index over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the safe limit established by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x exceeding acceptable limits.
Firecracker Prohibition and Recent Policy Shifts
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as winter begins.
However in recent months, the recently formed local leadership approached the supreme court to request a relaxation of the prohibition.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and environment".
Court Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, the court agreed to the proposal, mandating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific periods throughout the celebrations.
During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the capital, with insufficient monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Many air quality sensors throughout the capital registered pollution peaking around the night hours to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.
Regional Effects
The widespread use of pyrotechnics during the festival also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the events.
Persistent Pollution Issue
The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the city have persisted as a significant challenge for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the concentration of hazardous airborne contaminants in the air has been found to spike to seventy percent above the peak readings ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly regarded as the globally most contaminated city.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from agricultural fires in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating toxic haze that remains stagnant over the capital as cooler air sets in.
Health and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million residents residing in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to numerous studies.
The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and lung disorders, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
Environmental contamination is projected to be accounting for ten thousand untimely deaths annually in the capital.
